We threw a party at the County Jail!

Post date - November 13th, 2009 | Catagory - Blog, Featured | Comments - 10

It was Raghu’s Birthday and we thought we could celebrate it by doing something unique, something no Indian band has done ever before! (Infact, something very few bands in the world have attempted!) To take music to places it has never been to before! And as if to satisfy all these cravings, we hit upon the idea of performing at the ‘Parappana Agrahara’ - The Bangalore Central Jail!

Nothing can prepare you for the first time you enter a Jail (and in my case, it was only to check the venue!) - when you walk into those gates, the nervousness sets in and you are just in a heightened state of awareness suddenly! you are keenly observing every single detail and always watching out of the corner of your eye for something un-natural.

But again, once you are there for about 20 minutes, nothing can beat how quickly you get used to the place! Atleast the Bangalore Central Jail was that way for me. After a short duration, you began to see the human side of the people around you and not start to wonder why he was there!

We got all our permissions in place well in advance and inspite of some last minute jitters, we were all set to start on time.

At this point, all of us should put our hands together for Acoustic Control, the guys who did sound at the venue, who gave us a massive discount and shared in the crazy idea that enamoured us from the word go!

We knew that we were asking for too much if we started our audience to sit quietly as we ran through our sound check! So we quickly did a line check and then just went up to the green room and quickly got into costume! and at 12 noon, the band started.

Now none of the wardens were ready for what was to follow and and I don’t think most of the prisoners had any idea either. There were there ready to watch what was happening, but were not expecting to hear much or see much, or atleast thats what they told us from previous experience. So when they saw us set up the truss and the flying speaker system, they did not know what would hit them!

Right from the word go, it was a PARTY! All of them wished Raghu and we launched into “Hey Bhagwan” which saw a lot of hooting and clapping and one guy whistling through the song that sounded like a variety of birds were meeting! By the time we came to “Mysore Se Aayi”, we had most of them with us willing us to take them further!

The calls for Kannada rang loud after that and Gudugudiya Sedi Nodo started the Kannada set. From there, there was no looking back! we ran through “Lokada Kallaji Maduthinanthi”, one of the newer songs, “Khidki” and then “Neene Beku”, which they all went crazy about! We had them standing and dancing and shirts being swirled in the air and the whole time, the police and the jailors watched as the people in their custody truly were having fun in a place that was inherently not meant to be fun!

The warden then came over and thanked everyone for pulling this off and admitted that he had no idea what to expect when they told him it was going to be a “rock” show, but he then said that it was just perfect for him and everyone that was in there!

The finale was what has become synonymous with Raghu in Karnataka atleast, we played “Ninna Pujege Bande Mahadeshwara” and what a fitting end it was! the entire place erupted with everyone joining in and singing along, it was something you only hear about in fables!

We had a great time putting this together and thanks to Prasad from Prakruthi and every one of the prison authorities who helped us to make this happen. Thanks also to Sanjay and Sathya and the boys from Acoustic Control for making sure it was all smooth and nice and for the excellent set up! Huge thanks to Ganesh Raghunathan for documenting the whole thing with your photos!

We hope that for that one hour or so that we performed there, we helped some of the prisoners look at the bright side of life and that somewhere music made a connection, that will someday lead to reform :)

Happy Birthday Raghu - I don’t think it could have been any more special!

Hong Kong - Day 1

Post date - September 19th, 2008 | Catagory - Blog | Comments - 3

It started well! The first day in Kowloon was good for us to get used to the place and the temperature :P (Now I am just trying a star tantrum .. Its all fine!) We’ve been taken care of very well and are staying in pretty much the center of Kwonloon on the very fashionable ‘Kimberly street’ which I call the ‘marriage central’ considering the number of marriage shops around!

The hotel we stay in has some very interesting furniture which Raghu took a fancy to and as you an see in this picture, he was going ga-ga over the sofas and the couches!

Also, yesterday was the first time we saw the brand new Raghu Dixt Project T-Shirts and I should tell you they look quite fantastic! so the next you catch us at a gig, a T-Shirt is a must buy! Here is Vijay modelling for the T-Shirts. So tell us what you think!

Of course he is not a model, not yet atleast, but he did take some time to prepart himself in the many mirrors on the wall that don’t really show you anything!

After that, we headed to the venue of the show to take a look at the venue we will be performing at the next day. The lovely Stacey showed us around and it looked like a good place to play a show! And this will be the first ever time that we are recorded as a band to go on National Radio!

We closed the evening with a dinner hosted by the Indian Embassy at the Foreign correspondents club which was quite lovely and EXTREMELY Filling!!

Thats it for now .. more to come soon!

Breaking the Silence!

Post date - July 7th, 2008 | Catagory - Blog | Comments - 2

Its been a long long silence and a very tough one to maintain if you know the kind of people that we are (who usually love making a big noise :P) but we are finally getting back on track after Raghu’s accident.

Expect a lot of things to move at break-neck speed (no pun intended ;)!! ).. Okay okay! I will stop with these sidey puns.

This is to inform you chaps that the band is finally getting together after its long hiatus and we will be playing tomorrow in Chennai a the Taj Coromondel for a private event. If you guys are in Chennai and want to come by and say Hi! Get in touch!!

It feels good …

In the meanwhile, a couple of interesting videos have made their way to YouTube and if you guys haven’t checked them yet, make sure you do NOW!!

The one shown here is a video of us playing in Itanagar - a day after the accident! This was a fully brilliant show!

There are a few more videos that require a lot of explaining which Raghu himself has promised to do! so watch this space :)

A good show and a clean room!

Post date - March 23rd, 2008 | Catagory - Blog | Comments - 0

There are only 2 things a band on the road wants … A good show and a clean room. There is the money, there is the adulation and everything else that comes with it, but at the core of things, we would be really happy with a great show! sometimes even with a good show … and a nice place to go sleep at the end of the show!

A few shows happened recently which warmed our hearts and it would just be unfair for me to not mention it!

We went to Vasavi College very very very tired! It was over 10 hours of travel after shows that finished in the wee hours of the morning that we landed in Hyderabad. Raghu’s voice was completely sore and he din’t even make it for soundcheck eventually.

The minute we landed in the airport, there were a couple of students waiting for us and we even had a choice of cars for us to pick to take to the venue! That itself is quite something for us!

Nitin was at the venue and he had sorted the sound out, Siva worked on the drums and got that excuse of a drumkit to sound tight! Everything just worked like clockwork and it was a total pleasure working there and getting things into place. The tiredness and weariness just went out and things somehow just fell into place!

A large part of this turnaround was the way in which little things were taken care of for us which is really appreciated!

The other show we played recently was in Chennai where we played at the ArtSeek Music Festival which we really were blown away by the variety and the freshness of the music we saw! But that is a whole new topic which I will talk about soon!

For now .. thanks Vasavi College especially Kapil and the other boys who did everything there! You guys rock!
